It’s been a busy but slow week… Lots of sales, not so many big flips. My best thrift shop flips this week were an Orvis silk tie (w/ trout print) -paid $2 sold for $22; Versace silk tie -paid $2, sold for $24; Inov-8 minimalist running shoes (paid $25, sold for $62). Also sold a few more pairs of hiking boots and shoes. Gearing up for more heavy shopping in two weekends!

I hope to get as many sales as possible before I go on vacation for most of July and have to put stuff on hold!

Mike (and anyone else who sells neckties),

How long do neckties typically hang around your store? Okay, I just re-read that sentence and realize that it sounds like the beginning of a necktie joke. . . . But seriously, have you found that they sell quickly or slowly or what? I have a few listed and a BUNCH more to photograph and post, but so far I’ve sold only one after it sat for months on eBay. It was a good flip and my favorite kind of item to ship – small, lightweight, unbreakable.

It really depends on the brand and the style. Anything by Hermes, Versace, Kiton, Charvet, Polo Ralph Lauren Purple Label, and the other REALLY high end makes will sell quickly. Others may hang out for a while. Classic designs from good manufacturers sell fairly well, as do “whimsical” patterned ties by the respected manufacturers. I’ve heard of used Hermes ties in fun patterns going for north of $120 in auctions.

My best so far was a PRL Purple Label tie that went for $51. Ties are my favorite things to look for at thrifts (along with dress and sport shirts) because they take up almost no room and are typically priced at $2 around here (low overhead). I’ve redonated some ties that never sold, but overall, I’m way ahead on them.

thanks Mike that was super helpful. I picked up some at thrift last week that I *hoped* were high end lol. i havent listed yet but thanks for the list of top brands 😀

  4. Mike says:

    Sorry, forgot two other things…

Pictures are key. Good closeups of the texture of the fabric will help sell ties. Show details that show the condition the tie is in.

Watch for fakes…. Some brands are counterfeited often (look for “second tags” with different manufacture locations, misspellings, “bad” embroidery, etc…). For this reason, be sure to post pictures of all the tags so potential buyers will know that it’s legit.

  5. Lauren says:

Random stuff this week… All items were free shipping unless noted.
Aqua Green Furby paid $5 (I bought 16, store returns and this is the 5th one I have sold) sold for 49.99

Ashley Watson recycled leather purse, pd $4 sold for $55, going to Switzerland. buyer paid international shipping
Orvis embroidered skirt pd $1 sold for $25
Centennial Composers 6cd set pd $1 sold for $50
Lilka Anthropologie dress pd $4 sold for $24.99

  6. Mike says:

    Furbies still sell??

I was working at the local drugstore back when those things were all the rage… What was it, ’99? Crazy, crazy world. And hurray for Orvis! I swear that’s the brand I have the most luck with (possibly excepting Thomas Pink).
