Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of water….

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I had purchased a metal detector at an estate sale.  Well, today was the day my son and I broke it in….

In my head, my dreams….my vision if you will….I pictured us strolling merrily up the beach while the detector beeped here and there sending us into frenzies of glorious digging.  From what I understand…a total normal prediction from someone who has never used a metal detector before.

Alas…like most things.  My dream was not the same as reality.

The reality was we walked about a mile and the only time the thing beeped was when the metal trowel we were carrying came too close to it.  So after trying to keep up a”We’re gonna find something cool!” excitement for over an hour…and the sun starting to really heat up….we left the white sandy beach.  But we weren’t giving up.

I quickly ran through my mind all the parks that were close by…and decided to go down to a local one by another small beach.

We walked into the park and I flipped on the machine…and as we were walking through a sandy area…it started beeping loudly.  My son and I looked at each other and he knew to step back…lest it be the trowel…again. But it wasn’t!

So there we are….digging a little hole…moving the detector over now and again to make sure it was still there. BEEP! BEEP!…Dig, Dig…..BEEP! BEEP!  Dig,Dig….It was really getting exciting when….CLINK! The trowel hit something metal.  We looked at each other. I reached down to retrieve the treasure and …pulled…out……

Whoo-hoo! Clap! Clap! Whistle! Whistle! OOOOOO…ahhhhh!

Cost of metal detector: $60.00

Cost of beach parking and side trip to McDonalds for early breakfast: $6.00

The memory of the laughing we did when we realized what our “treasure” was: Priceless

Keep the faith. My dad has found many the treasure with his metal detector….and lots of bottle caps.

Made me laugh. I always wanted a metal detector, but I don’t have that much patience. Although the laugh would be well worth it!
